Professor's photography on display
Professor's photography on display
Date 9/21/2000 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & CultureJulie Strom, who teaches the photography course at Luther, is displaying a photography exhibit entitled 'Camera Views' Sept. 17-24 at The Frame Shop and Gallery in New Hampton.
The exhibit includes over 25 color and 10 black and white photographs of portraits, landscapes, wildlife and still life.
In addition to the New Hampton exhibit, Strom's photography can be viewed in the faculty art show in Loyalty Hall throughout the month of September.
Strom's work has been displayed in numerous exhibits throughout Minnesota and Iowa and has been published in magazines and newspapers such as the Agora magazine, Luther alumni magazine and KWWL -TV's 1996 calendar.
Her interest in photography began when she was 12 years old through a 4-H photography project that earned her a trip to the state fair. Her parents helped her build a darkroom in their basement when she was only 16.
"I really liked photography and had some early success, which encouraged me to keep going," said Strom.
Strom continued her early photography career as the yearbook photographer at New Hampton High School and has since become a professional photographer and professor of photography.
She graduated from Luther in 1993 and returned to Luther in 1995 as an assistant in the college publications office. The following year she was hired as a teaching associate in art to teach one photography class of 16 students each semester.
Although Strom originally majored in elementary education, she enjoys teaching at the college level.
"I know that all my students are in class because they want to be," she stated. "It's gratifying to see them get excited about their work."
