Internet Systems Consortium, APNIC, and APJII Install First Root Nameserver in Jakarta, Indonesia

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 2004--Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), APNIC, and APJII have installed a new F-root nameserver in Jakarta, Indonesia. The new server was deployed in cooperation with Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia (APJII) and is hosted at the Indonesia Internet Exchange (IIX).
Joao Damas, F-root Programme Manager, stated, "ISC is extremely happy to be working with APJII and APNIC in bringing Internet services closer to the Indonesian Internet community, enhancing its resilience and technical independence from external resources and services, and contributing to create a global network. Installation in Indonesia brings DNS root servers closer to one of the most important countries in the Asia Pacific region."

Root servers make available information for finding authoritative servers for top-level domains; there are several hundred such domains, including "COM", "ORG", "UK", and "ID". Computers use this information interpret URLs, e-mail addresses, and perform other types of Internet transactions.

Paul Wilson, Director General of APNIC, added, "This is the seventh F-root server installation which APNIC has supported in the Asia Pacific. We are pleased with our ongoing progress to provide ISPs and the Internet community at large with faster DNS response and additional resilience to DNS services, both of which are critical improvements in the Asia Pacific region."

Since November 2002, APNIC has supported the installation of nine root servers across the Asia Pacific region, including F-root deployments in Brisbane, Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, and Jakarta and I-root deployments (in collaboration with Swedish company Autonomica) in Hong Kong and Bangkok. APNIC is currently working on plans to install several more instances of I- and K-roots in various locations in the region.
