I've been getting my life in order no thanks to the person who is supposed to be here to help me. I recall seeing many movies about college life which portray advisors as helpful, if not concerned, for their advisees. So I've come to a point where I've finally learned that professors have jobs, doctorates, and tenures, and whether or not they let a person slip through the cracks has little effect on their life's course.
As Headless I feel I should share my experience, so it won't happen to others as it has to me. Let me also say that I'm aware of personal integrity and fortitude as well as responsibility and humility. It was not until after floundering displays of the former that I sat down and collected my thoughts.
In a humble fashion I approached sir advisor and laid out my thoughts, concerns and questions. After having spoken my piece I was treated to what was little more than a lecture, a series of commands or simply not at all what I anticipated.
My concern comes from having gone in with no expectation than perhaps a bit of help. Headless is a student and advisor is faculty. Who knows more about college red tape? I thought the answer was advisors and I still believe this.
Oh, I have had a number of advisors and also plenty of professors. I know the dangers of overgeneralizations, but many overlook their own foibles until they find they've been generalized. As a whole over four years I've had far more positive interactions with registrar, security, custodial, maintenance, dining services...(etc.) personnel than professors or faculty. I urge you student population, to say hello to as many professors as you can and other staff as well.
Somehow through a haughty status of knowledge or professorship it seems that a simple smile or hello in return is actually difficult for faculty. And please, faculty, think for you are portrayed as mentors when we visit; then behave as cold, calculated authority once we enroll.
