Golf looks to build on fall
Date 10/9/2003 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsThe Luther mens golf team is a young team with only one senior on the roster, but they show signs of great things to come.
This year, the team's fall schedule included meets in Lincoln, Neb., Eau Claire, Wis., and the Twin Cities.
The Norse opened play at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite Sept. 11-12. The 36-hole tournament was played on the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course, a par-72 that measured 6,507 yards. The Norse posted a two day total of 645, for a tie for seventh place with Loras College. Host Nebraska Wesleyan took the team championship with a two-day total of 602. Many other Iowa Conference foes were also in the field, including Central College (third, 614), Coe College (fifth, 636), Wartburg College (sixth, 644), and Simpson College (tenth, 651).
The Norse were led by Ben Hanson ('07) who fired a (81-79-160), good for a tie at 34th place. Andy Hoegh ('06) finished one stroke behind Hanson with a (85-76-161), followed by Mike Eisele ('05) who tied for 40th with a (86-76-162). Christian Klein ('05) tied for 45th with (84-81-165).
On Sept. 21-22, the Norse traveled to Eau Claire for the Frank Wrigglesworth Tournament. The field included 14 teams. The par-71, 18-hole course measured 6,617 yards.
Eau Claire was crowned the champion, winning by ten strokes, with a 36-hole total of 583. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) was second with 593, and St. Johns University, (Minn.) finished in third at 602. The Norse finished ninth with a two day stroke total of 633.
Christian Klein headlined the Norse squad with rounds of 78 and 79 that were good for a 157, leaving him in a tie for 33rd place. The rest of the team included Ben Hanson (t35, 80-78-158), Mike Eisele (t41, 78-81-159), Andy Hoegh (t41 83-76-159), and Eric Temple ('05) (t61, 85-85-170).
The Norse concluded their fall season with a trip to the three day Twin Cities Classic, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus. The tournament was played on three different courses in three days, including Elk River Country Club, Links at Northfork, and the Wayzata Country Club. Twenty-two teams made up this tournament field.
St. Johns University (Minn.) fired a 54-hole total of 898, taking the championship. Host Gustavus finished second, firing a 54-hole total of 912. The Norse took 16th place with a total of 983.
Hoegh said, "We are excited to start up fresh again this spring and try and win a conference championship."
The Norse will travel to Orlando, Fla., over spring break for their annual trip. They open their spring schedule in Galesburg, Ill., at the Knox Invitational.
