Instant Messaging Interoperability Moves Forward

Instant Messaging Interoperability Moves Forward

Jabber, Inc. Announces XMPP-to-SIP Gateway

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 21, 2004--Interoperability between enterprise instant messaging applications received a big boost today as Jabber, Inc. announced a planned server-to-server gateway between its own XMPP-based platform, Jabber XCP, and IBM's version of SIMPLE in its Lotus Instant Messaging product. Jabber, Inc. reported that this product launch will provide the basis for additional XMPP-SIP interoperability releases from the company in the months to come.
"Recent news from Microsoft, Yahoo!, and AOL along with today's Jabber, Inc. announcement are encouraging industry developments," said Tony Bamonti, president of Jabber, Inc. "Jabber, Inc. has long been committed to interoperability between the multiple IM protocols having taken action previously on the wireless front (SMS, Wireless Village) and now in the traditional EIM space. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate with Jabber, Inc. taking a leadership role."

XMPP, the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, is the only protocol approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for instant messaging and presence. Jabber XCP is the leading commercial platform based upon the XMPP standard, with between 5 and 6 million licenses sold and deployed worldwide. XMPP has received the endorsement of large technology companies such as Oracle, Sun, Intel, HP, IBM Global Services and others.

"Our customers are primarily interested in developing high value solutions that occur when you integrate presence-based messaging to, from, and between people, applications, protocols, and devices," said Joe Hildebrand chief architect at Jabber, Inc. "As a development platform, XMPP has some distinct advantages in terms of the flexibility, extensibility, scalability, and server-to-server federation capability necessary to deliver on the high value promise. That said, IBM in particular has a large user base with whom our customers want to communicate and Jabber, Inc. is committed to supporting those needs."

SIMPLE is an Internet draft protocol currently in development that stands for SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is an IETF protocol that has received the endorsement of IBM and Microsoft. Jabber, Inc. said the XMPP-to-SIP gateway will allow for basic message and presence information to be shared between applications built on Jabber XCP and Lotus IM. Jabber, Inc. anticipates delivering the gateway by Q4 of this year.
